Washington Rugby Club Pre-Season Kicks Off in Style Under New Head Coach Andy Stevenson
Washington Rugby Club launched their 2025/26 pre-season in energetic style this week, with new Head Coach Andy Stevenson leading his first session at the club. Players were greeted with a session packed full of fitness, fast-paced games, controlled chaos and sharp skills work, setting the tone for an exciting season ahead.
Stevenson, who joins Washington with a wealth of coaching experience, wasted no time in stamping his mark on the squad. The session was a vibrant mix of high-tempo drills, fun competitive games, and technical skill development, giving returning players and new faces alike a taste of what’s to come.
"It’s all about setting standards early and making pre-season enjoyable but purposeful," said Stevenson. "The lads responded brilliantly. There’s real energy around the group and we’re already starting to build a culture where players push themselves and each other to improve."
The evening saw over 40 players take part in activities ranging from intense fitness circuits to small-sided handling games designed to replicate match-day decision-making under pressure. Despite the hard graft, the mood was upbeat, with plenty of laughter and encouragement flying around the pitch.
Director of Rugby Dave Addison added: "Andy’s approach is fresh, and exactly what we wanted for the club. Pre-season is about fitness, of course, but also about bringing the team together, and tonight was a perfect balance of hard work and enjoyment."
With weekly sessions now underway, Washington RFC are throwing open their doors to new and returning players, whether seasoned veterans or complete beginners. Training continues Thursday evenings with touch rugby offered on a Tuesday, with players preparing for a competitive campaign in the CANDY leagues and social fixtures.
The club is particularly keen to build on last season’s momentum, aiming to grow squad numbers and continue its proud tradition of welcoming all players, whatever their background or playing experience.
